London based Indie/Acoustic band Narrow Plains have kindly provided us with some answers to a few questions that we have asked them!
Q: What are all your names?
A: Charlie Ferriday- Guitar and lead vocals
Roger Connick- Bass and backing vocals
Edd Simpson- Guitar and keys
Stuart Connick- Drums
Q: What/who brought you guys together as a band?
A: Well, it’s pretty simple- we were all at school together. We played in loads of different bands when we were at school, but never all together. Charlie and Stuart had a band called ‘Empty Search’, and then became a two piece acoustic band when they both went to university. Roger joined the band to record some tracks in 2011, and that’s when we came up with the name ‘Narrow Plains’. Edd has recently joined the band following the release of our debut album.
Q: What are each of your main influences?
A: Charlie- Bon Iver, Jimmy Eat World
Roger- Blink 182, New Found Glory
Stuart-The Gaslight Anthem, Bright eyes
Edd- Sufjan Stevens, War on drugs
Q. What is the last track you all listened to?
A: Charlie-Childish Gambino- 3005
Roger- Yellowcard- Here I am alive
Stuart- Ludovico Einaudi- Berlin song
Edd- Arcade Fire- Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
Q: If you could support any band in the world together or not who would that be?
A: Difficult to choose! I think supporting a band like the Foo Fighters would be a real privilege, and especially having seen what Dave Grohl has done for up and coming acts in the past.
Q: What do all you guys do outside of making music?
A: We all have day jobs! It’s pretty common for bands at our level to support their music by working, but we’d obviously love to focus completely on the music at some point.
Q: What was the Hard Rock Rising competition like?
A: It was pretty exciting for us. We’d gone in for the same competition the year before and didn’t even get past the online round, so we were shocked to find that we were in the semi finals and even more so to get into the London final and eventually win. We also found it really strange playing a show and then staying on the stage whilst three judges analysed our performance. The other bands were fantastic, and we made some great friends there, including EditSelect who supported us at our album launch this year.
Q: What is your main inspiration when writing songs?
A: It’s quite varied but generally Charlie will initiate a song when he thinks up a guitar riff and vocal pattern combination. Jamming as a band is also a big source of new ideas. The lyrics usually come last and they tend to come from our experiences of relationships (romantic or otherwise).
